Old Schoolhouse is Top of Catering Class!

The title of Best Catering Establishment, awarded by the Northern Ireland Tourist Board, has been bestowed upon a well known local restaurant.
The Old Schoolhouse Inn, situated near Castle Espie, just outside Comber, was given the prestigious award last week in recognition of 'the highest quality fayre using local produce’.
Sir Reg Empey presented this year’s Northern Ireland Tourism Awards, which aim to celebrate the best in business, promote new ideas and high standards, and enhance the region’s appeal as an attractive tourist destination.
Speaking at the awards, Sir Reg said:
“Tourism and the whole of the hospitality industry together, hold out the prospect of phenomenal growth, both in the number of people employed and in the massive financial investment which can be attracted.
“We need to exceed visitors’ expectations and to do this all tourism interests must work closely and share ideas on how to maximise the potential and the opportunities.”
He added it was time for businesses to grasp the market, increase the number of hotels and guesthouses, and boost investment: “The thrust for the next three years is about working closely to promote a strong image of Northern Ireland. Our exceptional natural environment, our people, their cultures, and the fact that we are an undiscovered destination with novelty, curiosity and surprise are key selling points.”
The Old Schoolhouse Inn is an ideal spot for both local people and tourists. Offering a restaurant and
accommodation, this was the first year that proprietors, Terry and Avril Brown, had entered any sort of awards.
They were naturally delighted when they won: “It may not be the Oscars, but it’s like an Oscar to us!” said Terry.
The husband and wife team are responsible for the catering themselves, and Avril is the main chef.
“I am really delighted for Avril,” added Terry. “We have been in the business for 17 years and this was the first time we had entered any sort of competition.”
The Edwardian-style restaurant offers a varied menu of French-style cuisine and makes full use of the fresh produce on their doorstep: “We use only fresh local produce. The main menu changes with the seasons to make use of whatever ingredients are in season at the time,” added Terry.
Terry and Avril were awarded a specially commissioned Tyrone Crystal trophy at last week's ceremony, which was held in Belfast's Ramada Hotel.
